$20,000 Damage in Halelani Village Condo Fire

PUHI, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Firefighters responded to a structure fire at the Halelani Village condominiums in Puhi Wednesday night. Multiple units were dispatched to the scene on Hanalima Street around 9:00 PM to find heavy smoke coming from a second-floor unit. Firefighters from the Lihu`e fire station were first on scene and were soon assisted by crews from Kapa`a and the on-duty Battalion Chief. The fire was brought under control in about an hour and were able to clear the scene by 10:40 PM. A 56-year-old man who was home at the time the fire started was able to escape without serious injury. He was treated for non-life threatening injuries by responding AMR medics and released at the scene. Fire inspectors estimate the damage to the structure and its contents to be roughly $20,000. The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental.
