Brush Fire Ignites Residential Roof in Hanapepe

HANAPEPE, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Firefighters responded to a brush fire that spread to a house in Hanapepe around 3:30 PM Friday afternoon. The fire reportedly started along a hillside in Hanapepe Valley. By the time the first units arrived on scene the fire had also spread to the roof of a one-story house located nearby on Kane Road where a neighbor was trying to put out the flames with a garden hose. Occupants were home at the time and were able to escape unharmed. Both fires were quickly brought under control by Hanapepe firefighters, with assistance from Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 conducting water drops and cleared the scene a little after 5:00 PM. Fire inspectors estimate roughly $2,000 in damage was done to the home’s roofing material. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.
