Kuhio Highway Closed, Convoys Halted, Shelter Opened

HANALEI, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Kūhiō Highway in the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge is closed until further notice due to a Flash Flood Warning for the island of Kaua‘i. This road closure includes the portion of Kūhiō Highway that remains closed due to a landslide. Kaua‘i police are currently on scene and state Department of Transportation officials are responding. State DOT officials announce that the convoys on Kūhiō Highway between Waikoko and Wainiha are temporarily suspended until further notice due to weather conditions. Officials are monitoring the highway and will provide updated information as it becomes available. A Flash Flood Warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads, and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. The warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop. Ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving conditions are expected. If you must drive, please do so with extreme caution. For updates on road conditions and closures, please call 241-1725. Please do not call Kaua‘i police 911 unless you have an emergency. 11:20 A.M. UPDATE: Due to the road closure, the American Red Cross has now opened a shelter at Hanalei Elementary School.
