Dot Investigating Homeless Camp in Lihu`e

LIHU`E, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — The State of Hawai`i is taking a look at a homeless camp on Rice Street in Lihu`e. The encampment appears to be mostly on land owned by the Department of Transportation, so HDOT is sending its “Homeless Director” to Kaua`i from Oahu on Wednesday to make an assessment. The action to clean up the site and help homeless people relocate is a first for Kaua`i, although HDOT has experience in dealing with situations like this from Oahu. The director says his job will be to “coordinate with service providers” to determine what’s needed for the cleanup, connect with the people living on the land, and help them move to a shelter if they choose.
