Fare War Erupts Between Hawai`ian and Southwest

HONOLULU, OAHU (Ben Caxton) — With Southwest Airlines now offering service to Hawai`i, and entering the intra-island market, longtime carrier Hawai`ian airlines has responded. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the Honolulu-based airline was offering fares as lows as $98 Monday for flights between Oahu and Maui starting next month. The discounted fares are showing up in May as well, with Hawai’ian’s prices matching the lowest fares offered by its new competitor. Hawai`ian Airlines has been the island’s sole carrier for a little over a year, since November of 2017. Dallas-based Southwest will make its inaugural flight to the islands from Oakland to Honolulu this Sunday evening.
