First Southwest "Test Flight" to Hawaii Succeeds

OAKLAND, CA (Ben Caxton) — You are now free to move about Hawai`i. That’s what Southwest Airlines hopes they are one step closer to being able to say now that they have completed a first “test flight” to the islands from Oakland, California. Southwest said in a statement Tuesday that the flight was intended to demonstrate to the Federal Aviation Administration it’s long-range navigation and communications procedures and capabilities. Southwest has applied for FAA certification to fly to Honolulu and three other Hawaiian destinations from Oakland, San Jose, San Diego and Sacramento in California. The airline also has said it eventually plans to get into the intra-island market providing flights between islands as well. No dates have been announced for the start of regular service.
