Hanalei Bay Open Again After Tiger Shark Attack

HANALEI, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Hanalei Bay reopened to swimmers Tuesday after a shark attack sent one surfer to the hospital. The Kauai Fire Department said the a man was surfing off Hanalei around 1:45 PM Monday afternoon when he suffered wounds consistent with having been bitten by a tiger shark. The surfer, who friends say is a firefighter from Kauai`s west side, sustained lacerations to his leg and was transported by medics to Wilcox Hospital for treatment where he is currently recovering. Hanalei Bay was closed to swimming after the incident with lifeguards posting “Shark Sighted” and “No Swimming” signs along Hanalei Bay and patrolling the beach to warn surfers and beachgoers to stay out of the water.
