High Surf Warnings Issued for Kauai & Niihau

HONOLULU, OAHU (Ben Caxton) — A large northwest swell will spread from northwest to southeast down the island chain today, resulting in very large and dangerous surf along north and west facing shores of most islands. With waves expected to reach 25 to 35 feet today both Kaua`i and Niihau have been placed under a High Surf Warning that will run through midday Thursday when wave heights are expected to decrease slightly to 20 to 25-foot heights. Kaua`i county officials remind both residents and vacationers alike that entering the water in these areas during the High Surf Warning is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death. Spectators are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline.
