High Surf Warnings Up Through Tuesday Morning

LIHU`E, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — High Surf Warnings are up for north- and west-facing shores to start the week on Kaua`i. Forecasters say the combination of a long-period northwest swell and a lowpressure system passing through the state will bring large anddisorganized surf today through tonight with surf building to 18 to 28 feet along north and west facing shores of Ni`ihau and Kaua`i. This could cause significant beach erosion, overwash onto vulnerable low-lying coastal roadways, and surges within north and west-facing harbors. Beachgoers can expect to see water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves, and strong longshore and rip currents. Authorities warn that anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.
