Hiker Airlifted from Hanakapi`ai

HANAKAPI`AI, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Firefighters responded to a call of a male hiker in distress Thursday afternoon along the Hanakapi`ai Trail. Authorities were first notified that a 72-year-old California man had fallen off the trail while hiking and injured his arm around 2:00 PM. When a rescue team aboard Air 1 arrived at the scene they found the man about 20 feet below the trail on a steep terrain. He was pulled up using a 150-foot line and then airlifted him to a nearby landing zone at Ke’e. The man refused treatment at the scene and used a private vehicle to seek further treatment for his injuries.
