Increasing Std’s in Hawai`i Linked to Online Dating

HONOLULU, OAHU (Ben Caxton) — Hawai`i now has the highest numbers of sexually transmitted diseases in nearly 30 years and health officials think they know why. Online dating. The ease of connecting with other people online means more sexual partners which can help diseases and infections spread. Adding to the problem is a decline in the use of condoms, and STD’s that show few symptoms so people who are active sexually do not know they are infected and continue to spread the diseases. In Hawai`i there were 7,732 cases of chlamydia in 2018, up from 5,972 cases in 2008. Gonorrhea more than doubled over the past 10 years from 611 to 1,496 cases. Syphilis infections increased to 180 cases from 38 a decade ago. The trends in Hawai`i are being mirrored across the country where infection rates have risen for the fifth year in a row.
