Inmates Riot, Start Fire at Maui Jail

WAILUKU, MAUI (Ben Caxton) — Inmates at a Maui jail rioted and set a small fire after breaking sprinklers on Monday. The incident happened over a period of three hours at the Maui Community Correctional Center which houses detainees before they go to trial. Fire firefighters responded to the scene while the Mayor Michael Victorino asked area residents to avoid it. A few inmates refused to evacuate their holding cells according to a State Department of Public Safety spokeswoman. The jail remains on lockdown today.
