48 New Monk Seal Pup Births in 2019 a Record

THE BIG ISLAND (Ben Caxton) — 2019 was a record year for monk seal births on the islands. While the overall population remained about the same as 2018, at 1400, The Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program says there were a record 48 pups born last year. About 1,100 seals reside in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, while around 300 seals make their homes in the main Hawaiian Islands.
