Heavy Weather Causes Flooding, Closes Roads, and Beach Towers

LIHU`E, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Heavy weather on Saturday caused problems islandwide. According to website http://weatheralertnow.com, the National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for The island at 2:34 AM for a slow-moving storm centered over the Wailua Homesteads, moving north at 5 mph, producing 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail. A Flash Flood Warning was also issued that lasted into the morning. Due to Flash Flooding, KuhioHighway in the vicinity of both the Wailua Bridge and Hanalei Bridge were closed with heavy ponding islandwide. The bad weather also forced ocean safety officials to close the Ke`e lifeguard tower for Saturday. Traffic signals along Rice Street also were damaged by the storm, reverting to flashing yellow, and flashing red until evening repairs could be made.
