KALAHEO, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Kaua`i police are asking the public’s help as they continue to investigate the death of 24-year-old Florentino Maipi, of Ele`ele, who was killed while walking on Halewili Road in Kalaheo last week. Acting Assistant Chief Paul Applegate says that although they believe the driver of the vehicle that first struck Maipi has identified, they say there could be at least two other vehicles that may have inadvertently struck Maipi after the initial impact. Applegate asks anyone was traveling on Halewili Road the night of the accident that may have seen or heard anything no matter how insignificant to please report it to police immediately. Specifically, police want information from drivers who were traveling eastbound on Halewili Road on Sunday, September 30, between 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM, in the vicinity of the concrete Wahiawa Bridge located between the west junction of Halewili Road and Kaumuali’i Highway, and Kaua’i Coffee Company. Anyone with information is urged to call KPD’s Traffic Safety Section at 241-1617. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers at 246-8300. According to police, Maipi was walking in the eastbound lane of Halewili Road when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle operated by David Curry of Kalaheo. Curry was not at the scene when police arrived and was later arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury or death. He has since been released pending further investigation.
