Residents Evacuated As Fire Raged Tuesday

KOLOA, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — A brush fire that broke out around 3:45 PM Tuesday near Mahaulepu forced the evacuation of residents in the area a short time later. Kaua`i Police began going door-to-door on Kipuka Street and Weliweli Tract, in Koloa a few hours after firefighters arrived, at 5:45 PM. The Red Cross opened a shelter for the affected residents at the Koloa Neighborhood Center which remained open and in use until the fire was brought under control and area roads were reopened around 9:30 PM. Fire crews remained on the scene throughout the night monitor the area.
