Shark Sighting Closes Kealia Beach

KEALIA, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Ocean Safety officials closed Kealia beach to swimming due to a shark sighting Tuesday. Beachgoers reported seeing two sharks near the shoreline along the north end of the beach a little past noon and alerted lifeguards who confirmed the sighting when they too spotted a roughly eight-foot grey reef shark in the water. As a safety precaution Kealia Beach was closed to swimming until further notice and signs have been posted to warn all beachgoers of the shark sighting. Lifeguards and OSB officials will reassess the situation today to see if the bach can be reopened.
