Swim Events Getting Coast Guard Protection

THE BIG ISLAND (Ben Caxton) — The U.S. Coast Guard announced late last week that they will be giving some official protection to participants in island swimming competitions. The plan will see a 100-yard buffer zone placed around athletes to keep unauthorized people and vessels in the area from interfering in competitions like the upcoming Ironman World Championship next month. The buffer would be in effect from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. both days, and violations could result in expulsion from the area and a citation.
