Swimming Not Advised on Many Beaches Today

KEKAHA, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — Even though the northwest swells that have been hitting the north and west facing shores of the island chain with waves of up to 35 feet will be decreasing steadily today, ocean safety officials are advising no swimming or snorkeling at Ke’e, Ha’ena, and Kekaha beaches due to high surf and dangerous ocean conditions. Lifeguards yesterday were reporting waves of up to 30 feet on the North Shore, and up to 20 feet in Kekaha, with very strong rip currents. Spectators are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline. A High Surf Warning continues for all for north and west-facing shores of Kaua’i and Ni’ihau through 6:00 PM today according to the National Weather Service.
