Five Years in Jail for Kapa`a Burglar

LIHU`E, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — 23-year-old Darren Ornellas is going to jail for five years. And maybe more. Ornellas, from Hilo on the Big Island, pled no-contest Monday in connection with a home burglary in Kapa`a in May 2016 where prosecutors say he stole jewelry, a handbag, and an iPad mini. He has been held since his arrest in November of 2017 on $25,000 bail. Ornellas, who has a history of similar crimes going back to age 18 was charged as a repeat offender which requires a minimum sentence of five years on the theft counts.
