Judge Doubles Sentence Deal for Bathroom Voyeur

LIHU`E, KAUA`I (Ben Caxton) — A local judge last week doubled the agreed sentence for a man who spied on women in the bathroom of the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club. Former resort janitor Alan Ganir was arrested in September of 2018 on charges that he had placed his iPhone actively recording video through a hole in a tissue box stashed behind a toilet in the women’s employee locker room. The discovery of the phone by co-workers led to claims that the hotel knew about Ganir’s actions but refused to act, and a class-action lawsuit, which is still underway, was filed against the Mariott. Prosecutors reached a plea deal with Ganir to ask for no more than six months in jail, plus probation, and restitution for the victims. But on Thursday Fifth Circuit Court Chief Judge Randal Valenciano rejected the terms and elected to double the recommended sentence, sending Ganir to jail for one year.
